The kids (20 and 30 somethings) that watch me on YouTube or in conference presentations often ask “do you even workout?” LOL! At almost 60 years of age I certainly don’t do it the same way, have many more considerations, and don’t expect the same results as 30-40 years ago (especially without drugs… I think they call it “hormone replacement therapy” now to make it accepted). Do I have to go back in time 30 or 40 years, go back to childish goals, return to 270 pounds and a 400 pound front squat (ironically the period when I knew absolutely nothing) in order for people to learn? My dusty trophies don’t make me smart. They just clutter the attic. It is my 30-40 years of mistakes, my unique broad continuum of experiences from working with people unable to even lift their arm or stand to those who placed in the Olympia, my innate distrust of what’s popular, my lack of acceptance for sound bites as truth or support for beliefs, etc. that can provide a rare set of short cuts for anyone willing to commit to learning. If you only listen to someone because of trophies, current appearance, or current abilities, then you’re going to endure a lot of the mistakes, biases, and ignorance of your role models and gurus… at your own expense. And if they didn’t struggle with their goals (for example to “get abs” or “big arms”) they can’t help you in your struggle to achieve yours.
